Trinity Access Programmes (TAP)

Nine years ago I never imagined that I would get a degree, a PhD, and end up working at Trinity College. Without the extra funding supplied by TAP completing my degree would not have been financially viable. Without TAP I would never have developed the skills and, more importantly, the confidence to apply for a place in College in the first place. I can quite honestly say that without TAP I would simply not be where I am today.

We have definitely noticed the ‘TAP effect’ in our school. The students are more positive and motivated to advance in their education and their parents are also becoming more involved and supportive.

When I began Secondary School my main aim was to get my Leaving Certificate, get out of School and get a job. However, with the great encouragement from my teachers and the help of the access programme activities, I subsequently changed my mind. I think that the turning point for me came when I ‘shadowed’ a student in Trinity for a day. I got a real feel for what college life is like, and I have to say, I really liked it. In addition my involvement in the TAP initiatives and going to Open Days helped me in this regard as well.

Sharon Sperin, Shadowing Day Participant 2006

TAP has given me confidence in my abilities and capabilities and has always provided a strong network of support...I was 48 when I started TAP and 52 when I graduated from College. TAP has helped me fulfil another ambition because I now work for the Disability Service in Trinity College.

My Day in Trinity College Dublin,
Truly enjoyed by one and all,
Real life paintings on the Buttery wall.
Interesting facts to fill the brain, none of the buildings look the same,
Information to be told,
Tonnes of things to unfold.
Yeah it was really coo,
Better than going to school.

Poem by Sara - 6th class student involved in TAP Maths & Science Project

I come from Tallaght. I did the Leaving Certificate at Old Bawn Community School and found my way on to TAP. Doing the access programme was like jumping out of a plane with more than one parachute. It has been exciting and a little scary. But I arrived safely and will continue on in College.

The TAP Foundation Course has sent my life in a new direction, it has created opportunities that otherwise just wouldn't exist. I really want to help make this happen for other people by helping out with TTTTS.
